Preventing Eyesight Failure

Since the cause of Eyesight Failure is not fully understood, and no treatments are known for eye diseases, prevention becomes more important. Protecting the eyes from excessive solar radiation and chemicals will reduce the onset of some age related eye conditions.

Preventing Cataracts

Although cataracts have no scientifically proven prevention, the wearing of ultraviolet-protecting sunglasses may slow the development of cataracts.

Regular intake of antioxidants (such as vitamin C and E) may also be helpful.

Preventing Macular Degeneration

The Age-Related Eye Disease Study showed that a combination of high-dose beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc can reduce the risk of developing advanced AMD by about 25 percent in those patients who have earlier but significant forms of the disease.

This is the only proven intervention to decrease the risk of advanced AMD at this time. A follow up study, Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 to study the potential benefits of lutein, zeaxanthine, and fish oil, is currently underway.

Statins, drugs used for reducing cholesterol levels, are also proving to be effective in prevention of AMD, and in slowing its progression.

Anecortave acetate [Retanne], an anti-angiogenic drug injected behind the eye is currently being studied as a way of reducing the risk of neovascular (or wet) AMD in high-risk patients.

Eyesight Foods

Diets that contain ample amounts of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and zinc are associated with a greatly reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Good sources of these nutrients: fresh produce, nuts, fortified cereals, and supplements.

In recent studies of those over age 55, those who reported the highest intake of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and zinc were significantly less likely to develop AMD than those who had the lowest intake.

  • Vitamin C - oranges, mangoes, and strawberries.
  • Zinc - Fortified cereal, Turkey, chicken
  • Vitamin E - Almonds and peanut butter, or a supplement.
  • Beta Carotene - Sweet potatoes, apricots, and peaches.

Other nutrients that appear to be beneficial for eye health include lutein and zeaxanthin. Like beta carotene, these carotenoids are found in various kinds of fruits and vegetables. Good sources of:

  • Lutein - spinach, peas, and green bell peppers.
  • Zeaxanthin - corn, spinach, orange bell peppers, and tangerines.
