Alzheimers is difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to
treat.
Alzheimers Treatments
As of 2006, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease. Medications
offer relatively small symptomatic benefit [such as memory] for
some patients but do not slow disease progression.
Diet, exercise and memory stimulation used to help prevent
alzheimers is thought to help slow the progression of the disease.
In a recent program developed by Dr. Gary Small, ULCA - the focus
was on mental exercises, physical exercise and antioxidants.
Antioxidants - ALA
Antioxidants may be helpful in preventing the oxidation stress
in the brain, thus preventing the destruction of brain cells.
Antioxidant Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant only when
there is an excess of it and it is in the "free" state
in the cells.
Under normal conditions, there is little free ALA circulating in
your body. Additional ALA is taken through either consuming supplements
or by injection. Foods contain only tiny amounts of ALA, hence diet
alone is insufficent to boost the levels in the body sufficiently.
ALA's power as an antioxidant is its versatility. Iit helps
deactivate an unusually wide array of cell-damaging free radicals
in many bodily systems. In particular, ALA helps protect the mitochondria
and the genetic material, DNA.
As we age, mitochondrial function is impaired. ALA also works closely
with vitamin C and E and some other antioxidants, "recycling"
them and thus making them much more effective.
