Helping Your Teenager Cope with Acne
Acne is a common skin problem often resistant to over the counter
acne creams and acne solutions.
The emotional scars caused by acne are far deeper than those seen
on the skin.
As a teenager is evolving from childhood into adulthood, they are
finding their role in amongst their peers. Having obvious red bumps
on your face, does little for the self confidence and motivation
to pursue ones natural abilities. This issues cannot be healed by
any acne creams or acne solutions.
There is little any doctor or expert dermatologist can do to help
you as a parent to help your child overcome the emotional impacts
of acne.
However, there certainly are some things you can do to help your
child through this painful experience.
Remind your child that acne is temporary - the
shame, depression and even self pity need not define your child
for the rest of their lives. Remind them that acne is common during
teenage years but in most cases clears by adulthood.
Help them manage their self esteem - explain how
the strength of an adult is often determined by how well they overcame
difficulties in thier lives. Help them see that managing the emotional
impact of acne and taking positive
steps to prevent acne from occurring helps to keep them in control
of the rest of their lives.
Encourage active participation - acne often makes
a teenager become somewhat socially reclusive to hide from the shame
and embarrassment. Help them find activities that help boost their
confidence and keep them socially engaged.
Find a good dermatologist early - don't wait for
the acne problem to worsen. Make sure your teenager trusts this
expert - they are more likely to follow their advice if they respect
them and build a good relationship early on.
Provide continual guidance, without nagging -
gently remind them as to what things help prevent and cure their
acne, and which things work against them. Remember, this is a learning
experience for them and they are not likely to remember everything
they are told first time.
Boost your teen’s self-confidence - provide
positive reinforcement of their abilities in all areas of their
life. If a teenagers confidence overall is strong, their physical
appearance is more likely to be viewed in a healtheir perspective.
Whilst there is not a lot acne creams and acne solutions can do
to prevent acne, you as a parent certainly have a role to play in
helping your child.
