About Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide consists of two benzoyl groups joined by a peroxide
group. It belongs to the organic peroxide family.
Benzoyl peroxide is a strong bleaching agent commonly used in the
topical treatment of mild to moderate acne.
Benzoyl peroxide is a safe drug and as such can be used by children
and also by women during the pregnancy period.
How Benzoly Peroxide Works
Benzoyl peroxide has three core properties. It acts as:
- An effective antiseptic - reduces the number of skin surface
bacteria and also helps in reduction of yeasts on the surface
of the skin.
- An oxidizing agent
- An anti inflammatory
Benzoyl Peroxide As An Acne Treatment
Benzoyl peroxide is an effective in the treatment of various kinds
of acne. It works to unclog the pore by allowing the outlet of the
pore to open, decreasing inflammation on the skin, and killing the
acne bacteria.
The chemical is applied on the affected area in the form of a gel
or cream with a concentration of 10 percent or less.
How To Use
Benzoyl peroxide may cause dryness and irritation, so is best limited
to direct acne blemishes.
Some people are sensitive to this drug. Start using just a small
quantity and gradually increase the quantity so that the skin may
get used to the chemical.
Alternatively the cream or gel with a 2.5 percent Benzoyl peroxide
may be used that is as effective as the 10 percent option if they
have a sustained delivery system.
Benzoyl peroxide should not be used in pregnant women since it
has proven to be unhealthy to the fetus as shown in animal studies.
